Jesus’ Prayer in the Upper Room
Vs. 1: Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,
-The Father Glorified the Son by fulfilling His purpose in Him.
-Glorifying the Father was the Son’s passion throughout His life.
Vs. 2: as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
-Only Christ has the authority to give eternal life and He gives it only to those whom the Father has given Him.
Vs. 3: This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
-The purpose of Christ’s life and death was to reconcile us to His Father.
Vs. 9: I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.
-The Lord’s intercession is reserved for His children.
Vs. 16: They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
-Our very essence is redefined by our new life in Christ.
Vs. 18: As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
-… that the world may believe & know that the Father sent Him.
Vs. 21-22: I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You;
-You and I were on Christ’s mind when He prayed in the Upper Room and He prayed for our unity.
Vs. 24: Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
-The Lord wants us to be with Him and to behold His glory to complete the full reconciliation and restoration of man’s destiny.
